Jaguares en la Patagonia

Abstract

Los jaguares, Panthera onca, fueron comunes en Sudamérica austral en tiempos históricos, desde la costa atlántica al pie de Los Andes, llegando aproximadamente hacia el sur, hasta el paralelo 41˚. Supuestos registros más australes de estos carnívoros son discutibles. En esta contribución, en base a textos, tradiciones y toponimia, se discute la presencia de estos animales en el sur de la Argentina y, especialmente, en la Patagonia norte, donde vivieron hasta fines del siglo XIX, cuando se vieron desplazados por el incremento de la población y la expansión de la frontera agropecuaria.

Jaguars, Panthera onca, were common, at historical times, in southern South America, from the Atlantic coast to the foothills of the Andes, and attained, approximately, to the south, the 41˚st parallel. Alleged southernmost records of these carnivorous are disputable. In this contribution, based on texts, traditions and toponymy, we discuss on the presence of these animals in southern Argentina and, specially, northern Patagonia, where they inhabited before the end of the nineteenth century, when the settlement of new communities and the expansion of the agricultural frontier displaced them.
