La teoría de la materia en Juan Duns Escoto

Abstract

No existe en la Edad Media una teoría física universal e indisputablemente aceptada por todos los maestros. Las apa sionadas controversias físicas que así surgen no constituyen simples ejercicios académicos regulados por la autoridad eclesiástica; sino que expresan un crisol de múltiples opiniones propuestas por filósofos convencidos de la verdad de sus explicaciones. El mismo modo de enseñanza universitario centrado en las disputaciones, consolidadas como una forma sistemática y regular, no sólo de aprendizaje sino de investigación de la época, da cuentas de esta diversidad que permite la inclusión de las distintas versiones argumentativas respecto de un tema, y de su cuidadoso examen mediante la aplicación del método dialéctico. Como enfoque expresivo de esta búsqueda dinámica de la constitución de la ciencia nos detendremos en el análisis de la teoría física de la materia en Juan Duns Escoto. Tomaremos como centro de nuestro análisis la exposición contenida en el desarrollo del relato hexameral presente en su Lectura (L. II d. 12-15). La sección escogida constituye el esbo- zo de una cosmología desarrollada sobre la base del comentario al poema de la creación (Gn 1, 1-2, 4). En ella nos ofrece una teoría general sobre la constitución del ser material sobre la que específicamente nos detendre- mos; además de una exposición cosmológica sobre la luz y un resumen de la organización general del cosmos supra y sublunar.

There is no universal and indisputable physics theory in the Middle Ages that is accepted by all the masters. The heated controversies that consequently arise are not simple academic exercises regulated by the ecclesiastic authority. They express a plethora of multiple opinions advocated by philosophers convinced of the truth of their explanations. The university teaching method centered on the disputations, consolidated as a systematic and regular form not only of learning but also of research of the times, accounts for this diversity that allows the inclusion of several argumentative versions regarding a subject and the careful examination though the application of the dialectic method. As an expressive approach to the dynamic search of the constitution of science, we will focus on John Duns Scotus’ physic theory of matter. The focus of our analysis will be the exposition found within the development of the hexameral literature in Duns Scotus’ Lectura(L. II d. 12-15). The selected section constitutes an outline of a cosmology developed on the basis of the poem of creation (Gn 1, 1-2, 4). It provides us with a general theory about the constitution of the material being, which we will deal with specifically, and a cosmologic exposition about light and a summary of the general organization of the supra and sublunar cosmos.
