La protesta social y sus representaciones en la prensa argentina entre 1996 y 2002

Abstract

Este artículo presenta los hallazgos centrales de una investigación sobre la relación entre los enfrentamientos físicos y sus representaciones en seis episodios de los acaecidos en Argentina entre 1996 y 2002, un periodo de profunda crisis económica y laboral que derivó en una intensificación del ciclo de protestas. A partir del análisis crítico del discurso, se examinan las propiedades que se atribuyeron a los casos seleccionados y al tratamiento represivo estatal mediante declaraciones que aparecieron en la prensa escrita. El objetivo es revisar el campo de disputa desde el sentido de las acciones y las características de las interpretaciones publicadas en los momentos precisos en que la violencia institucional es aplicada, a fin de iniciar una explicación de la criminalización de la protesta.

This article presents the main findings of a research on the relation between physical confrontations and its interpretations in six episodes of protest between 1996 and 2002 in Argentina. In this period a profound economic and employment crisis affected most of the country’s population. Consequently, it was a period in which a general increase of the cycle of social protests took place. Employing tools provided by Critical Discourse Analysis, we analyze the properties attributed to each of the six protests and repressive reaction of the State, through statements published by the press. The main objective is to review the field of dispute over the meaning of the actions and characteristics of the interpretations published at the precise moments that the institutional violence was applied, as the beginning of an explanation to the criminalization of protest.
