The interaction of Italian associationism from Buenos Aires, 1878-1918

Abstract

El propósito de este trabajo es analizar el proceso de articulación entre las diversas asociaciones de la comunidad italiana de Buenos Aires, hacia mediados del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Si bien el asociacionismo italiano en la Argentina ha sido abordado desde diversas perspectivas, nos proponemos hacer foco en las relaciones que se establecieron entre las distintas instituciones. En este sentido, podemos pensar esta articulación como la interacción de las asociaciones que los inmigrantes italianos fueron conformando en una misma estructura. La multiplicidad de instituciones y su superposición, las crisis financieras recurrentes, los grandes emprendimientos y los conflictos que fueron surgiendo entre los líderes de las asociaciones requería de la conformación de un ámbito de confluencia donde se pudieran abordar estas problemáticas. Sin embargo, los fuertes enfrentamientos ideológicos fueron determinantes para postergar la unidad. Esto cambió ante la incursión de Italia en la Guerra de Libia y la Primera Guerra Mundial, en un contexto internacional atravesado por un fuerte nacionalismo, lo cual favoreció diversos emprendimientos por parte de los inmigrantes italianos que derivaron en el desarrollo de una estructura propia para el asociacionismo.

The purpose of this work is to analyze the process of articulation between the various associations of the Italian community of Buenos Aires, towards the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Although Italian associationism in Argentina has been approached from different perspectives, we propose to focus on the relationships that were established between the different institutions. In this sense, we can think of this articulation as the interaction of the associations that the Italian immigrants were forming in the same structure. The multiplicity of institutions and their superposition, the recurring financial crises, the great entrepreneurships, and the conflicts that arose between the leaders of the associations required the formation of a confluence area where these problems could be approached. However, the strong ideological confrontations were decisive to postpone the unit. This situation changed with the Italy's incursion into the Libyan War and World War I, in an international context crossed by a strong nationalism, which favored diverse undertakings by the Italian immigrants that derived in the development of their own structure for the associationism.
