Deuda Pública y crecimiento en Argentina: Un análisis para el período 1970-2018

Abstract

En este artículo se analiza el impacto de la deuda pública sobre el crecimiento para el caso argentino, durante el período 1970-2018. Actualmente, la mayor parte de los economistas está a favor de una relación no lineal entre estas variables. En este trabajo se propone estudiar el fenómeno a partir de un modelo de regresión por umbrales (Trheshold model). Los resultados empíricos muestran que el valor umbral de deuda pública total del gobierno central (como porcentaje del PBI) para el cual se desencadena el efecto no lineal sobre el PBI per cápita es del 54,59 %, siendo la relación negativa y estadísticamente significativa. No obstante, por debajo del valor umbral la relación no es significativa.

This article analyzes the impact of the growing public debt on growth for the Argentine case, during the period 1970-2018. Currently, the dominant idea is in favor a non-linear relationship between these two variables. In this work it is proposed to study this phenomenon from a regression model by thresholds (Trheshold model). The threshold value of total public debt of the central government (as a percentage of GDP) for which the non-linear effect on per capita GDP is triggered is 54,59%. The relationship is negative and statistically significant. However, below the threshold value the relationship is not significant.
