Imágenes de Dominguito: Los retratos de Domingo Fidel Sarmiento por Victor Tison y Rodolfo Soucup

Abstract

En 1886 Domingo Faustino Sarmiento lee en La Ilustración Argentina una breve biografía de su presunto hijo adoptivo, acompañada de un retrato –según sus propias palabras– “poco parecido”. Tal como confiesa en La vida de Dominguito, esta imagen fallida de su hijo habría motivado la reescritura de los manuscritos perdidos de la biografía que había iniciado veinte años atrás, luego de la muerte del capitán Domingo Fidel Sarmiento en la Guerra del Paraguay. Para la publicación de esta nueva biografía, Sarmiento además se ocupó de contratar a un artista a fin de que restaurara la imagen del hijo que había guardado en su memoria. ¿Qué había de tan peligroso o condenable en el retrato de La Ilustración Argentina? ¿Por qué Sarmiento lo rechazó de ese modo y se lanzó rápidamente a reescribir la biografía en menos de treinta días? Tales preguntas orientan este trabajo, que propone un recorrido a través de la iconografía de Domingo Fidel Sarmiento, con el objetivo de elucidar el modo en que, al forjar una imagen del hijo, el padre se retrató a sí mismo.

In 1886 Domingo Faustino Sarmiento found in La Ilustración Argentina a brief biography of his presumed adopted son, along with a portrait that was –in his own words– “not alike”. As described in La vida de Dominguito, this failed image of the son triggered the rewriting of the lost manuscripts of the biography that he had started twenty years before, after captain Domingo Fidel Sarmiento’s death during the Paraguayan War. For the publishing of this biography, Sarmiento also hired an artist in order to restore the image of the son that he had kept in his mind. What was so dangerous or condemnable in the portrait of La Ilustración Argentina? Why did Sarmiento reject it so strongly and quickly afterwards rewrote the biography in less than thirty days? Such questions guide this work, which aims to review the iconography of Domingo Fidel Sarmiento, in order to elucidate the way in which, by forging an image of the son, the father portrayed himself.
