Conócete a ti mismo: Una crítica a las lecturas intencionalistas de la teoría del conocimiento de Tomás de Aquino

Abstract

La distinción que establece Tomás de Aquino entre el esse intentionaley el esse naturale es vista por diferentes comentadores como la diferencia entre la existencia mental y la existencia extra-mental de un ente, respectivamente. A menudo se traduce esse intentionale como "existencia mental", incluso se ha llegado a decir que intentio significa "tener una idea". Según las lecturas intencionalistas la existencia intencional es lo que distingue a los seres cognoscitivos de los no-cognoscitivos, esto es, poseer una intentio sería una condición necesaria y suficiente para que un ente sea cognoscitivo. El objetivo del artículo es discutir esta tesis y mostrar que existe un tipo de conocimiento que no implica la presencia de formas que tengan una existencia intencional, como es el caso del conocimiento que los seres cognoscitivos tienen de sí mismos.

The distinction that Aquinas establishes between the esse intentionale and the esse naturale is seen by different commentators as the difference between the mental existence and the extra-mental existence of a being, respectively. Esse intentionale is often translated as "mental existence," even saying that intentio means "to have an idea". According to intentionalist readings, the intentional existence it is that distinguishes the cognitive beings from the non-cognitive beings, that is, having an intentio would be a necessary and sufficient condition for an entity to be cognitive. The objective of this paper is to discuss this thesis and to show that there is a type of knowledge that does not imply the presence of forms that have an intentional existence, as in the case of the knowledge that cognitive beings have of themselves.
