El origen de la filosofía en Derecho natural e historia de Leo Strauss

Abstract

El siguiente análisis busca indagar en la presentación de Leo Strauss del origen de la filosofía en la primera parte del capítulo tercero de Natural Right and History (1953). Argumentaremos que lo que el autor se propone aquí, lejos de ser una explicación histórica de dicho origen, es la articulación de una explicación filosófica: Strauss plantea de manera tácita la pregunta qué es la filosofía, y busca traer a la luz su significado original. Al aceptar esta consideración, veremos que el interés histórico que el libro parece exhibir es secundario en importancia, e incluso más, circunstancial. Nuestro objetivo en este trabajo es clarificar la reconstrucción del origen de la filosofía para dar a ver que esta argumentación de Strauss constituye su demostración de la posibilidad de la filosofía que, consecutivamente, apunta hacia un debate necesario en torno a la idea del derecho natural. En esta “genealogía” de la filosofía Strauss lidia permanentemente, aunque de manera velada, con la alternativa que acompaña a la filosofía desde su origen: la alternativa es amor obediente versus libre indagación. Es tarea del lector recuperar el contrapunto a cada paso.

The present study seeks to investigate Leo Strauss’ presentation of the origin of philosophy in the first part of the third chapter of Natural Right and History (1953). We will argue that what Strauss shows here, far from being a historical reconstruction of that origin, is rather the articulation of a philosophical explanation: Strauss tacitly raises the question what is philosophy? and seeks to bring to light its original meaning. By accepting this consideration, we will see that the historical interest that the book seems to exhibit is secondary in importance, even circumstantial. Our goal here will be to clarify the reconstruction of the origin of philosophy to show that Strauss's argument constitutes his demonstration of the possibility of philosophy that, consecutively, points to a necessary debate around the idea of natural law. In this “genealogy” of philosophy Strauss permanently deals, although in a veiled manner, with the alternative that accompanies philosophy from its origin: the alternative is obedient love versus free inquiry. It will be the reader's task to recover the counterpoint at each step.
