El problema del alojamiento en la ciudad de Mendoza: del hospedaje finisecular a la hotelería moderna (1890-1925)

Abstract

Este artículo explora las prácticas y formas de habitar vinculadas al turismo en la ciudad de Mendoza, específicamente desde el estudio de la arquitectura hotelera, en el arco temporal que va desde el final del siglo XIX hasta las primeras décadas del XX. Con el proceso modernizador en marcha como telón de fondo, la arquitectura destinada al incipiente turismo se mantuvo prácticamente invariable hasta la década de 1920, cuando la intervención precursora del Estado inauguró la fase moderna de la edilicia de hoteles. El análisis pormenorizado de un conjunto de edificios permitió trazar un recorrido que evidencia su evolución arquitectónica; en las variables tecnológica, tipológica, espacial y estilística. Estas cualidades se contrastaron con las representaciones sociales que circulaban sobre la cuestión del alojamiento, disponibles en fuentes escritas. En consecuencia, el estudio se sirvió de artículos y publicidades en prensa, postales, revistas, guías comerciales, planos y fotografías. Las innovaciones arquitectónicas manifiestas en los casos analizados confirman que la irrupción estatal marcó un punto de inflexión en la edilicia de hoteles.

This paper explores the practices and ways of living linked to tourism in the city of Mendoza, specifically from the study of hotel architecture, in the time span between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. With the modernization process underway as a backdrop, the architecture destined for the incipient tourism remained practically unchanged until the 1920s, when the precursor intervention of the State inaugurated the modern phase of the hotel building. The detailed analysis of a group of buildings allowed to trace a route that shows its architectural evolution; in the technological, typological, spatial and stylistic variables. These qualities were contrasted with the social representations that circulated around the problem of accommodation, accessible through written sources. Consequently, the study made use of articles and advertisements in the press, postcards, magazines, business guides, plans and photographs. The architectural innovations manifested in the analyzed cases confirm that the state’s irruption marked a turning point in hotel architecture.
