Viajes y expediciones en el Gran Chaco: Construcciones visuales de una etnocartografía del siglo XX

Abstract

Este artículo busca reflexionar sobre las construcciones del territorio y la población indígena chaqueña a partir de un corpus de imágenes fijas y móviles producidas por distintos expedicionarios y viajeros que recorrieron la región chaqueña en las tres primeras décadas del siglo XX. Se indaga -a través de la consideración de imágenes-archivo de "infierno verde" y "salvaje"- en la construcción de una visualidad que refiere a cartografías expansionistas sobre este territorio y una población indígena racializada posible de ser utilizada como mano de obra en el esquema capitalista. Asimismo, se reflexiona acerca de la posibilidad de conjugar esta mirada coercitiva y panóptica con el "derecho a mirar" y la reciprocidad de la mirada en el marco de relaciones intersubjetivas.

This paper aims to reflect on the structures of the territory and the Chaco indigenous population through the study of images produced by explorers and travelers of the Chaco region in the first three decades of the twentieth century. We explore, –through the consideration of recorded images of “green hell” and “savage”– the building of a visual mapping that relates to expansionary cartographies of this territory and racial-ized indigenous population that may be used as labor in the capitalist scheme. It also reflects on combining this compelling and panoptic gaze with “the right to look” and reciprocity of the gaze in the context of intersubjective relations.
