Resumen
Prosocial behavior (actions intended to benefit others) has been associated with a number of positive outcomes across childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. However, existing research often treats this complex set of behaviors as relatively unidimensional, which may account for a number of mixed and inconsistent findings. Thus, the book takes a multidimensional and developmental approach to prosocial behavior by examining multiple different types, targets, contexts, and motivations for prosocial behavior at different ages. Moreover, the book presents a range of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches to the study of prosocial behavior. Specifically, sections include biological, socialization, and cultural/contextual influences on prosocial behavior; as well as highlighting diverse types of prosocial behavior toward a number of different targets. Future directions are highlighted in each chapter to provide fruitful avenues for research that will move the field forward with a more nuanced approach to prosocial development.
