Simultaneous occurrence of cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis caused by different genotypes of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis

Abstract

This paper describes a rare case of leishmaniasis with simultaneous presentation of cutaneous and mucosal lesions in endemic areas for leishmaniasis. Usually, such a case does not occur simultaneously in cutaneous (CL) or mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Besides, we performed a molecular characterization of genetic variants of the causal agent, proposed a hypothesis for the interpretation of the finding, and highlighted the relevance for searching of the signs of mucosal lesions in suspected CL cases.
