Espíritus vinculados con el bosque y sus plantas en el mundo de los wichís del Chaco Semiárido salteño, Argentina

Abstract

El cosmos de los wichís, pueblo indígena del Gran Chaco, está conformado por diversos espacios, seres y entidades, entre los cuales se encuentran aquellos que la ciencia occidental considera "sobrenaturales". Este trabajo etnobotánico se enfoca en ellos, particularmente en los espíritus que tienen algún vínculo destacado con el bosque chaqueño, sus plantas y hongos. Se pretende describir detalladamente a los espíritus involucrados, analizar su relación con los vegetales y ámbitos del bosque, actualizar la información disponible sobre el tema, e ilustrar la importancia de considerar el plano espiritual en investigaciones de índole etnobiológica. Se registró un total de 20 espíritus vinculados íntimamente con el bosque y sus plantas. Se encontró que son pocos los vegetales del bosque (10-30% de las especies botánicas estudiadas en total) que se relacionan de manera directa y concreta con dichos seres, siendo la mayoría de ellas plantas de gran significación en la cultura wichí. El análisis de los resultados muestra que ciertos espíritus reflejan cambios culturales y ambientales que han ocurrido en la zona en los últimos siglos. El estudio de caso de esta parcialidad wichí permitió mostrar la importancia de considerar a los seres y elementos metafísicos en las investigaciones etnobiológicas, en particular al trabajar con culturas indígenas como la wichí donde lo "sobrenatural" y lo "natural" no se diferencian de manera categórica.

The cosmos of the Wichí people, an indigenous group of the Gran Chaco region, includes diverse entities, spaces and beings, among which we encounter those that Western science considers to be “supernatural”. This ethnobotanical study focuses on them,particularly on the spirits that have a special relationship with the Chaco forest and/or its plants and fungi. We intend to describe in detail the spirits involved, to analyze their associations with the plants and spaces of the forest, to renew the information on the matter that is available nowadays, and to illustrate the importance of considering the spiritual level in ethnobiological research. A total of 20 spirits intimately connected with the forest was recorded. There are few forest plants closely and directly related with spirits (10-30% of the botanical species studied), and most of them are plants of great significance in Wichí culture. An analysis of the results shows that certain spirits reflect the cultural and environmental changes that have occurred in the region over the last centuries. The case study of this particular group of Wichí people revealed the importance of taking into account metaphysical beings and elements in ethnobiological investigations, especially when working with indigenous cultures in which the“supernatural” and the “natural” are not categorically differentiated
