Lectura, cultura y estereotipos: una exploración de sus interrelaciones

Abstract

Este trabajo presenta los resultados de un estudio de investigación cuyo objetivo fue observar la aparición de estereotipos en la representación del contenido textual de un texto narrativo –en este caso un fragmento de Mi planta de naranja lima– por medio de reformulaciones visuales (representaciones gráficas que combinan palabras, frases, y oraciones con dibujos, gráficos, cuadros, grillas, etc.). El análisis reveló que estas reformulaciones visuales no fueron suficientes para capturar el contenido cultural del texto y ofrecieron un enfoque superficial, plagado de estereotipos. En general, el acercamiento a la alteridad se limitó a la percepción de los aspectos exóticos o excitantes de una cultura o subcultura, sin un esfuerzo genuino por familiarizarse con lo extraño. La dificultad de los alumnos de distanciarse de su propio sesgo cultural en la interpretación indica la necesidad de abordar los estereotipos en el marco del aula.

This paper presents the results of a research study aimed at observing the emergence of stereotypes in the representation of the textual content of a narrative text – in this case, Mi planta de naranja lima– through visual reformulations (visual representations including the combination of words, phrases, and/or sentences with drawings, graphs charts, tables, grids, and the like). Results suggest that the visual reformulations were not enough to capture the cultural content of the text used in the study and offered a superficial approach, plagued with stereotypes. In general, the approach to otherness was limited to the perception of what was exotic or exciting about a culture or subculture, without a genuine effort to become familiar with what was strange. The study revealed the learners' difficulty to distance themselves from their cultural bias in their interpretations, which points to the need to address stereotypes in the classroom.
